[ please don't make me explain it because i can't. ]

Just think of it as keeping the universe running smoothly. That's what I want.

It... Does. But... [ hmm. she mulls over how to explain this simply. ]

There's a certain amount of decay, so I want to reduce that.

You could think of it as physics, sure.

[ why not. ]

[ Madoka gives a small laugh. he doesn't need to understand, that's fine. ]

... I'm sort of responsible for it, so - yes.

In a way. There's another race that's really doing the work to sustain it, but I made their methods less effective. For a good reason, but...

[ well, now she feels somewhat responsible for making up for it when there are ways that she can. ]

Oh - you're right, it's a little bit complicated, isn't it? I don't mind telling you, it's not a secret.

[ Not when everyone here is from different worlds. Hmm, where to begin... ]

S-so...

[ She knows this is going to sound ridiculous, but. ]

This basics are that... Emotions create energy, and that can be used to reduce the entropy of the universe. There was a race called the Incubators that thought the amount of emotional energy from young girls would be worth harvesting, and so...

There was a system. In exchange for one wish, girls would be given magic, and take on the duty to fight witches. But in exchange for the hope those wishes created, there would always be equal despair, and eventually the magical girls would turn into the same witches they had fought...

I used my wish to change this system. No one should have to become what they fought, or have to fight what their friends became. No one should lose themselves like that.

But... This new system I created isn't as effective.

My wish was to erase every witch that ever was or ever will be, with my own hands.

This means that... Girls still become magical girls - and still fall into despair for the sake of the universe. But I take them away before they become witches.

It doesn't create as much energy. But it doesn't create as much tragedy, either. And I think that's worth it.

Sure.

Of course.
