[as soon as he woke up, senri was crying. it was a horrible, haunting dream. and there's this weird, twisting feeling in his chest that shiki's gone that comes with it. it's disorienting and it makes him feel sick, and he barely thinks to wipe his face before he bolts out of the game room without even seeming to notice if taka saw him.

and then he runs.

and he makes a mess of things.

and he doesn't know what to do, except that he wants to be far away from where he currently is.

so the furthest he can get is the stairs that lead out of the temple and descend into the clouds. and senri will head all the way down down down until he gets to the furthest step, right before he can touch the top of the clouds.

he just needs time, as usual. he doesn't expect anyone to come find him.]

[ taka, of course, woke up from the dream as well

when senri runs out, he doesn't chase after him. instead he goes straight to investigate and confirm shiki's death. he looks at the body and then moves on since there really isn't much he can examine like this.

he doesn't think he's looking for senri. like, the thought doesn't cross his mind at all as he wanders from room to room. but when he eventually finds him on the stairs, his immediate thought is there he is. ]

[it'd be fitting if the detective is the one to find him - but senri doesn't even seem to think that's a possibility.

takaomi's never looked for him when something bad happened before. maybe because they were at school, and had others to rely on. but it doesn't occur to him that takaomi might be one of the people that senri ended up worrying.

even when he hears steps

he's not going to turn around. he just rests his chin on his knees, and doesn't try to make conversation. it's rude, and he'll apologize to whoever it is later, but senri knows that he's not wearing a face that he can show the rest of the world right now]

Are you still crying?

[ it's not the kindest thing to say

but he closes the distance between them and sits down a few steps above the one senri is on. ]

[ugh.

it's that voice - and senri ends up hugging his legs even closer to him.]

[of course he is.]

he almost says it, but bite it back. because why? because they're partners? because taka is concerned for him? ]

Your face was all snotty this morning.

[he'll start with that, because at least it's familiar.

and he'll let a beat pass by.]

And woke up with the same feeling as I did, right?

Mm. Shiki was killed.

[ he frowns, thinking about the dream. it was... pretty horrific. ]

[it's because it's takaomi, actually.

it's because it's takaomi who is behind him, who is saying something so callous and uncaring, that senri turns around. his eyes are red, his face is still flushed from all the crying he was doing, and his expression is somewhere between shattered and furious. he reaches out to grab onto taka's collar - ]

So how can you say that so casually?!

[senri's fought to keep his expression away from everyone else - so that he could hide the anger and the sadness - but it's takaomi in front of him.

and senri's never been good at lying to taka, and right now the biggest lie is that he's any kind of okay]

Why aren't you more upset?!

[ he kind of expected this, but he still lets out a grunt of annoyance and places his hands on top of the one that's holding onto his collar. he then attempts to pry it off of him. ]

Not everyone is going to cry.

But you barely even look upset...!

[senri just clutches on all the tighter, sorry about the wrinkles taka.]

I get it - you barely knew her! Everyone's been telling me it's stupid for me to think that there's a way to get out of this with everyone alive. But someone still died!

[ - and it's different for shiki.

that's probably what's upsetting senri most.

he just hasn't been able to bring himself to say it out loud.]

[ he tries to push senri off this time, more roughly than when he was just trying to remove his hand. ]

[he lets go - but also has to take a second to make sure he doesn't fall off the staircase right into the clouds. he glares at taka anyway.

this is actually a bad place for them to be arguing]

You probably thought it! You think everything I do is stupid! If all you wanted to do was argue with me, then couldn't you have left it for another time?!

You're the one who started fighting! What, do you want me to start crying next?

[ it's definitely a terrible place for them to be fighting because there's a good chance someone will get tackled

he does stand up at that though. ]

[senri will stand up too, and that's probably bad news.]

I want you to leave me alone! I already know that you're bad with people. We might be from the same place, but that doesn't mean I'll make you look out for me.

So why are you even still here?!

Fine! You're on your own! I was a goddamn idiot for wanting to check in on someone like you anyway!

[ he shoves him again, and turn to leave. ]

[ . . . . ugh.

senri pauses - because sometimes that's all he wants. someone to look for him. and even though they fought, even though taka didn't say the right things to get senri to calm down -

he wipes at his eyes again.]

.... why did you try?

You don't like talking to people - least of all me.

[ he stops

and considers jut leaving anyway, because at this point he's too mad to really want any kind of conversation.

he doesn't move though. ]

... we're partners.

[ and senri was crying. ]

[he hates this.

he hates that it's like this, and he hates that his partner is taka. and he hates that for some reason just having that confirmation makes him feel a little bit better.

and senri will sigh a big breath and crouch down on the stairs again, as if standing was taking just way too much effort for even another second.]

... Shiks has my heart pin.

She's had it since Monday.

[just in case it comes up tomorrow]

but at least taka noticed it was missing before today... he's not sure how much is word is worth, though, since it's common knowledge that they knew each other before coming here. ]

She was playing the game because she wanted to save her partner, in another game she had to play.

Apparently they didn't choose each other. And they didn't get along at first. Shiks said that he was really rude, and thought that she was super annoying, and would walk away from her all the time because he just didn't feel like talking to her.

But something happened to him, and she was forced into leaving him behind - so she wanted her wish this game to be for him.

[he wonders why he feels like telling taka this. why it feels like right now he has to tell taka this. he pulls another pin out of his pocket - the Player Pin that shiki had with her]

So she was going to join my god's team, and we were going to try to win this whole thing, and we'd give our pins back to each other at the end.

... she makes a lot more sense now.

[ taka doesn't elaborate.

but shiki pressed him a lot about his attitude, and friendship, and it all makes more sense with newly added context. ]

You can still give the pin back at the end. You just have to still win.

... yeah. I was just thinking she'd be mad at me for fighting with my partner after all the work she's put in for hers, even though I thought he sounded - [like you] - .... well.

[another sigh and he rubs at his eyes again, as if just to make sure that no more tears will traitorously fall]

... I'm going to win. I have to win.

I need to find out if there's a way to get her god to change still....

... probably not. Since she'd be officially out of the competition now, so even if she changed her before she died...

he leans against the rails, since he's not sure if he should sit. senri probably still wants him gone so it'll be best to be able to make a quick exit. ]

It counts if you're on the winning god's team, even if you're out of the competition. You can still get your wish granted - that's what I was told, but if you could get it confirmed...

[he'd be happier and his shoulders relax, if only by a little bit. moving forward at least gives him less to be completely depressed about.]

... Shiks didn't switch yet. She couldn't - it happens on the weekend. But I don't think Ambition's gonna win.
